Description

For my Epic Rap Battles of History card project. Edgar Allan Poe appeared in episode 42, rapping against Stephen King. Made in Illustrator.

Also, I don't mean to be dramatic, but this was almost the last card in the series. In fact, it was almost the last artwork I ever did. Right after I finished drawing Mr. Poe on Friday, I went for a drive and got into a nasty crash. I'm alright now, but damn it was scary. I better stop delaying all these other projects I want to do. I'll make a journal entry later with more info.

Anyways, on to the information.

Edgar Allan Poe

19/1/1809 – 7/10/1849

Born Edgar Poe in Boston in 1809, Poe was a well known American author, poet, editor and literary critic. He is best known for his horror and mystery work, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre.

Orphaned at a young age, Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, and would later clash with them over finances. He attended one semester at the University of Virginia, but left due to lack of finances. He would later join the army in 1827, and that year published his first work, Tamerlane and other Poems. He then begun working for literary journals and periodicals, providing his own style of literary criticism. While travelling for work, he also married his cousin Virginia Clemm in 1835.

In 1845 Poe published his poem The Raven, which was an instant success and is still popular to this day. Two years later, Virginia died of tuberculosis. Her death had a big impact on Poe, who turned to alcohol to cope. Virginia's illness and death are believed to have impacted Poe's works, where young dying women are commonly found.

As well as poetry, Poe also published one novel, The Narrative of Gordon Pym of Nantucket, and many short stories in a range of genres, including horror, adventure, science fiction and detective fiction. His works have also been considered part of the Dark Romanticism Movement, and examples of Gothic fiction.

Poe died in 1849, at the age of 40. The cause of his death is unknown, and has been attributed to a range of causes. During his lifetime he was most well known as a critic, but his writing has influenced literature in America and around the world. Poe and his works have also made there way into pop culture, with him often being depicted as a tormented artist.

Nice job. Yes the Raven is his best known and best work. It's longer than most people think and I always enjoy reading it. I see you have the pit and the pendulum for a background.  It's funny most pet ravens are named either Nevermore or Edgar.
