Description

The first of the seven classes of Vertebrata, Superclass Agnatha.

So far, the designs I've come up with for this project have been based on European heraldry. I wanted to try something a bit different this time, and took inspiration from Japanese emblems called Mons. There are no set rules for Mon design, but most feature a roundel and an abstract design. In this case, I depicted the two extant groups of Agnatha - the lampreys and hagfish - with that characteristic jawless grin. Though, they may be a bit detailed for a proper Mon. I also added a scroll and some mantling (in this case representing a spinal cord without a vertabral column) in order to maintain consistency with the other emblems.

Agnatha means No Jaw. They first appeared in the Cambrian, and two groups remain today; the Lampreys and the Hagfish. Today there are only around 120 species of Agnathans, but they were much more prolific among the early fish of the Paleozoic. Hagfish are unique in that they have lost their spinal column; making them the only known organisms with a skull but no backbone.

I don't know how I missed this. Nice job.  I remember studying Agnatha in college and thought they were very interesting. I'm glad you're still making biological art like this.
